Adaptive Coordination and Control for Physical Human-Robot Collaboration Tasks

ABSTRACT
This talk examines collaboration and control mechanisms that enable intuitive and role-adaptive coordination in physical human-robot interaction under different task requirements and environmental conditions. The presentation begins by addressing how variations in object properties during co-manipulation affect information exchange between the human and the robot, and investigates how effective coordination can be maintained under these conditions. It then discusses the additional requirements imposed on interaction by dynamic and complex environments. Meeting these requirements necessitates not only intuitive coordination, but also a richer and bidirectional flow of information in order to maintain mutual awareness within the human-robot dyad. In this direction, the presentation analyzes interaction from an information-theoretic perspective and examines the fundamental principles governing coordinated behavior.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Doğanay Şirintuna received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Koç University with merit scholarships. He graduated with high honors, cum laude, in 2018 and 2020, and received the Academic Achievement Award at the end of his master’s studies. In 2021, he joined the Human-Robot Interfaces and Interaction Laboratory at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) as a Research Assistant. Since November 2022, he has been pursuing his doctoral studies in Advanced and Humanoid Robotics. His research interests include physical human-robot interaction, mobile manipulation, and robot learning.
